Things to Do:

Watching sunrise from the summit (reservation required) is the signature Haleakalā experience — bring warm layers, since it's genuinely cold at 10,000 feet before dawn. The Sliding Sands Trail lets you descend partway into the volcanic crater itself for a closer look at the otherworldly landscape.

Down in the separate Kīpahulu coastal district, the Pipiwai Trail leads through bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls, and the Pools of ʻOheʻo (Seven Sacred Pools) offer a swimmable, scenic stop near the coast.
