Hosmer Grove Campground
Near the park’s summit district entrance at around 6,800 feet, Hosmer Grove is a small, cool-climate campground surrounded by a mix of native and introduced trees — a genuinely different environment from the volcanic terrain higher up or the tropical coast below. Sites are primitive with pit toilets and no potable water, first-come, first-served with no reservation system, and the elevation means real nighttime cold even in a tropical destination — pack accordingly. Its location makes it a convenient overnight base for anyone planning an early drive up to the summit for sunrise, avoiding the long pre-dawn drive from lower elevations that most visitors have to make.
