Kīpahulu Campground
In Haleakalā’s separate coastal district along the Road to Hana, Kīpahulu Campground sits near the ocean, a world away from the summit’s volcanic crater — genuinely one of the more scenic free campgrounds in the entire National Park System. Sites are primitive with pit toilets and no potable water, first-come, first-served, and the campground puts you within walking distance of the Pools of ‘Ohe’o and close to the trailhead for the Pipiwai Trail’s bamboo forest and waterfalls. Given the long, winding Road to Hana drive required to reach this district, most visitors treat it as a separate trip from the summit rather than trying to combine both in one day — camping here lets you experience the coastal district without rushing the drive back.
