No special permit is required for general park entry; backcountry camping and river trips require their own separate permits.

Terlingua and Study Butte are the closest towns, both small and rustic, right outside the park's west entrance.

Why Visit?:

Big Bend is about as remote as national parks get in the Lower 48, and that remoteness is the whole point — some of the darkest night skies in the country, genuine solitude on the trails, and a landscape that shifts from desert floor to mountain forest to river canyon within the same park. It rewards the long drive in a way few other parks do.

The Rio Grande forms the park's entire southern border, which means Mexico is visible — sometimes walkable to, at low water — right from several trails, adding a genuinely different feel from any other desert park in the system.

Things to Do:

Santa Elena Canyon is the signature hike, a short trail into a dramatic 1,500-foot canyon carved by the Rio Grande. The Lost Mine Trail climbs into the cooler Chisos Mountains for sweeping desert views, and Hot Springs Historic Trail combines a bit of history with a soak in a natural riverside hot spring.

At night, don't skip the stargazing — Big Bend is one of the least light-polluted national parks in the country, and a clear night here shows a Milky Way most visitors have never actually seen before.

Closest airports: Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) is the most practical option, though it's still about a 3.5-hour drive — this is genuinely remote country, so budget real drive time no matter which airport you choose.
