Why Visit?:

Badlands looks like nowhere else in the country — layered, striped rock formations rising out of the prairie, carved by millions of years of erosion. It's an easy, dramatic stop for anyone road-tripping through South Dakota, and the Badlands Loop Road lets you see most of the highlights without much hiking at all.

It's also one of the richest fossil beds in the world, with ancient rhino and saber-toothed cat remains still being uncovered — a genuinely different kind of park experience if your interest leans toward paleontology as much as scenery.

Things to Do:

The Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240) is the essential drive, with pullouts at Big Badlands Overlook, Yellow Mounds, and Panorama Point. The Notch Trail and Door Trail are short, dramatic hikes right into the formations themselves — the Notch in particular involves a log ladder climb with a big payoff view.

Don't skip Sage Creek Rim Road if you have extra time — it's where you're most likely to see free-roaming bison, and it connects to the primitive Sage Creek Campground for a quieter, darker-sky experience than the main park road.
