Cedar Pass Campground
Located right beside the Ben Reifel Visitor Center and Cedar Pass Lodge, Cedar Pass is Badlands National Park’s developed, full-service campground, and the obvious choice for anyone who wants to be genuinely inside the park’s dramatic scenery without roughing it too much. Sites come with flush toilets, potable water, and electrical hookups for RVs — a real step up from the park’s other, far more primitive option — while still putting you within walking distance of the trailheads for the Door, Window, and Notch Trails. The Cedar Pass restaurant sits just steps away for anyone who doesn’t feel like cooking after a day of hiking, and the campground’s amphitheater hosts regular ranger-led programs, including summer astronomy nights that take full advantage of the park’s dark skies. The convenience does come with a trade-off: this is by far the more crowded of the park’s two campgrounds, with sites set close together, and it fills up fast in peak season, so book well ahead if you’re set on specific dates. For most first-time visitors, though, the combination of real amenities and being steps from the park’s best short hikes makes this the easy pick.
