Why Visit?:

Haleakalā's summit rises above the clouds on Maui, and watching sunrise over its massive volcanic crater is one of the most-requested experiences in all of Hawaii — otherworldly, silent, and genuinely worth the pre-dawn drive and advance reservation it requires. The park's separate coastal Kīpahulu district, with pools and waterfalls, feels like an entirely different park in the best way.

Because sunrise reservations are limited and book out in advance, this is one of the few national park experiences that genuinely requires planning weeks ahead rather than showing up and figuring it out.

Things to Do:

Watching sunrise from the summit (reservation required) is the signature Haleakalā experience — bring warm layers, since it's genuinely cold at 10,000 feet before dawn. The Sliding Sands Trail lets you descend partway into the volcanic crater itself for a closer look at the otherworldly landscape.

Down in the separate Kīpahulu coastal district, the Pipiwai Trail leads through bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls, and the Pools of ʻOheʻo (Seven Sacred Pools) offer a swimmable, scenic stop near the coast.

Closest airports: Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui is the only realistic option, about an hour's drive from the summit entrance.

Nearby Attractions:

The town of Paia and the famous Road to Hana both make natural additions to a Haleakalā visit if you're spending extra time on Maui's east side.
