Estes Park and Grand Lake are the main gateway towns, on the east and west sides of the park respectively.

The entrance fee is $35/vehicle (7-day) — a $100/person nonresident surcharge applies (2026) — or purchase a National Parks Yearly Pass.

Why Visit?:

Rocky Mountain is one of Colorado's signature parks, home to alpine tundra above 12,000 feet, Trail Ridge Road (the highest continuous paved road in the country), and elk herds that are genuinely easy to spot, especially during fall rut season. The scale and accessibility of its high-alpine scenery is hard to match anywhere else in the Lower 48.

Because of its popularity, the timed-entry reservation system is a real part of planning a visit here, not an afterthought — book ahead, especially for peak summer weekends.

Things to Do:

Driving Trail Ridge Road, with stops at the Alpine Visitor Center and various tundra overlooks, is the essential Rocky Mountain experience — genuinely one of the most dramatic drives in the country. Bear Lake offers an easy, popular loop trail with classic mountain-lake views, a good option if you want scenery without a strenuous hike.

Fall visitors should time a trip around elk rut season (roughly September into October), when bugling elk and dramatic herd behavior are on full display near Estes Park's meadows.
