North Cascades has earned the nickname 'the American Alps' for good reason — jagged, glacier-covered peaks and impossibly turquoise alpine lakes, all despite being one of the least-visited parks in the entire system. That low visitation, especially compared to nearby Mount Rainier and Olympic, means genuinely quiet trails even in peak summer.
Because access is limited to a single highway that closes each winter, this is a firmly seasonal park — plan around summer, when Highway 20 is fully open.
Driving the North Cascades Highway, with stops at Diablo Lake Overlook and Washington Pass, delivers dramatic scenery without much hiking required. The Cascade Pass Trail is a moderate, hugely rewarding hike into the high alpine country the park is known for.
Diablo Lake's striking turquoise color, caused by glacial silt, is one of the most photographed spots in the park — a boat tour or simple roadside overlook both offer good views of it.
Mount Rainier and Olympic National Parks are both a few hours away and commonly combined with North Cascades on a broader Washington parks road trip.
