Why Visit?:

Kobuk Valley is one of the least-visited national parks in the entire system, protecting remote Arctic sand dunes and the Kobuk River, and home to the twice-yearly migration of hundreds of thousands of caribou. There are no trails, no roads, and no facilities — this is genuine, self-directed Arctic wilderness, fly-in only.

The dunes themselves are a genuine surprise here, since most visitors don't expect true sand dunes this far north of the Arctic Circle.

Things to Do:

Seeing the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes — active dunes rising up to 100 feet, unusual this far north — is the park's signature sight, reachable by floatplane and a short walk. Timing a visit around the caribou migration (though exact dates vary year to year) offers a genuinely rare wildlife spectacle if you can align your trip with it.

Most visitors work with an air taxi service out of Kotzebue, since there's no infrastructure to navigate the park independently without real backcountry experience.
