Crater Lake's water is a genuinely startling, saturated blue — the deepest lake in the country, filling a caldera left behind when an ancient volcano collapsed nearly 8,000 years ago. The 33-mile Rim Drive lets you take in that color from dozens of different angles without much effort.
Because the park sits at high elevation and gets some of the heaviest snowfall in Oregon, the visiting window is genuinely short — plan around summer and early fall, or you may find much of the rim road closed.
Driving the full Rim Drive, with stops at Discovery Point and Watchman Overlook, is the essential Crater Lake experience. The Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal way down to the water's edge, a steep but manageable mile-long descent that connects to boat tours out to Wizard Island.
If you have extra time, Wizard Island itself — a cinder cone rising from the lake — is reachable by boat tour and worth the half-day detour for a genuinely different vantage point.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is about 3.5 hours south and pairs well on a broader Pacific Northwest volcano-focused road trip, and the town of Bend, Oregon offers a lively base with breweries and outdoor recreation if you're extending the trip.
