If you can time it right, the park's synchronous firefly event each late spring — one of only a few places in the U.S. where fireflies flash in unison — is a genuinely rare natural phenomenon worth planning a trip around.

Things to Do:

The 2.4-mile elevated Boardwalk Loop is the essential visit, a flat, easy walk through the heart of the old-growth forest with zero elevation gain. For a different perspective, paddling Cedar Creek by canoe or kayak winds you directly beneath the towering canopy, often with better wildlife viewing than the boardwalk.

If you're visiting in late May or early June, check the park's website for firefly event dates and reservations — it fills up fast and requires advance planning.
