Wheeler Peak Campground
At over 9,800 feet, Wheeler Peak is Great Basin’s highest and most scenic campground, sitting right at the trailhead for the park’s essential hikes — the Bristlecone and Alpine Lakes Loop, and the summit push up Wheeler Peak itself. Sites are primitive, with vault toilets and potable water but no hookups, and given the elevation, nights stay genuinely cold even in summer — come prepared with real warm layers regardless of the season. This is by far the most popular campground in a park that sees very little overall traffic, so while it’s not competing with Yellowstone-level demand, the limited number of sites can still fill on summer weekends. The payoff for staying this high is unbeatable proximity to the park’s best trails and some of the clearest night skies anywhere in the Lower 48.
