Just a short walk from the Rock Harbor ferry dock, this is the most accessible camping on Isle Royale — genuinely reachable in minutes rather than requiring a real hike, despite still falling under the island-wide overnight permit system, since there are no roads anywhere on Isle Royale. Sites are primitive, some with three-sided shelters (screened, first-come basis) and others tent-only, with pit toilets nearby and no potable hookups. Its proximity to the dock, visitor center, and camp store makes this the natural first or last night of an Isle Royale trip, whether you’re heading out to backpack the island’s interior or just arrived and want an easy introduction before venturing further. Given the island closes completely each winter, this is strictly a summer (roughly June through early September) destination.
