Piñon Flats Campground
The only developed campground in Great Sand Dunes National Park, Piñon Flats sits in piñon-juniper woodland with direct views of the dune field, making it a genuinely striking place to wake up. Sites offer vault toilets and potable water, no hookups, and the campground’s location puts you within easy reach of the main dune parking area for both sunrise and sunset dune climbs — arguably the best times of day to be out on the sand. Given the park’s popularity and the single-campground situation, reservations for peak season (late spring through early fall) fill up well in advance, so plan ahead if your dates are fixed. Nighttime here also means excellent stargazing, since the same dark skies that make the dunes glow at sunset carry through after dark.
