The only developed campground in Wind Cave National Park, Elk Mountain sits atop mixed-grass prairie near the visitor center, with bison and elk commonly grazing in view of the campsites. Sites offer vault toilets and potable water, no hookups, and the campground’s small size and location near the cave entrance make it a convenient, low-key base for anyone touring the cave and exploring the surrounding prairie trails. Being one of the lesser-known parks in the Black Hills, this campground sees noticeably less competition for sites than nearby Custer State Park or the busier Badlands campgrounds, even in peak summer.
