Brooks Camp Campground
The only developed campground in Katmai National Park, Brooks Camp Campground sits an easy walk from the famous bear-viewing platforms at Brooks Falls, and is genuinely unlike any other campground in the National Park System — the entire site is surrounded by an electric fence for bear safety, given how many brown bears pass through the immediate area during salmon season. Sites are primitive, reachable only by floatplane, with vault toilets and a food cache building where all food must be stored, not left at your tent. A mandatory bear safety orientation is required at check-in before you’re allowed to set up camp, and reservations are essential — this tiny campground has extremely limited capacity and demand from visitors hoping to see the famous bear-and-salmon spectacle is intense, especially in July. This is genuinely one of the most unique overnight experiences available anywhere in the park system, but it requires real advance planning given the fly-in access and permit system.
