Blackwoods Campground
Tucked under a dense canopy of spruce and pine about five miles south of downtown Bar Harbor, Blackwoods is the best-known and most centrally located campground in Acadia National Park, and the natural first choice for anyone visiting the park’s busy eastern side. Sites sit on gravel pads with fire rings and picnic tables, and while there are no individual hookups, the campground has a water fill station and dump station near the entrance for RVers. What sets Blackwoods apart is the convenience: the free Island Explorer shuttle stops right at the campground, so you can park the car for your entire stay and still reach Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, and Jordan Pond without driving. Flush-toilet restrooms are spread across both loops, and it’s an easy walk or short shuttle ride to some of the park’s most popular trailheads. The tree cover is a real advantage on hot summer days, though the trade-off is that sites in the inner loop (Loop A) sit close together — if you want more breathing room, request a site in the outer Loop B when you book. Reservations open six months in advance and this campground fills quickly in peak season, so book as early as your dates allow.
