The White River Visitor Center is the main facility in the park’s remote South Unit, about an hour’s drive south of the Ben Reifel Visitor Center on the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is the best place to learn about the Lakota history and culture of this land, with museum exhibits, videos about the park and the Lakota people, drinking water, restrooms, and rangers who offer impromptu talks and porch talks in summer. The South Unit is managed jointly with the Oglala Lakota Tribe, and the visitor center is the only facility with direct access to the White River. It is small and seasonal, so treat it as a deliberate side trip rather than a quick stop, and call ahead before the long drive.
