The Sugarlands Visitor Center is the busiest entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about two miles south of Gatlinburg on US-441. It has extensive natural history exhibits, a free film of about 20 minutes, a bookstore and gift shop, restrooms, and rangers who can help with maps, trail conditions, and the day’s programs. A few short, easy nature trails start right at the building, which makes it a good place to stretch your legs. It is a common first stop for visitors starting in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, and it is a good place to learn what to expect before you head over Newfound Gap Road. The center is open year-round except Christmas Day.
