The Island in the Sky Visitor Center is the main information stop for Canyonlands National Park’s most visited district, about 40 minutes from Moab and just inside the park on the road onto the mesa. Inside are exhibits on the park’s geology and history, book and map sales, an orientation video, a picnic area, wireless internet, and rangers who can help you plan the day. It is also where backcountry permits are handled. Water is available at the visitor center year-round, which matters because the overlooks and trails beyond have none. Stop here first to ask about road conditions and which overlooks fit your time, then head out to Mesa Arch and Grand View Point.
