Why Visit?:

Mount Rainier is an active volcano and the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S., ringed by old-growth forest and famous for its summer wildflower meadows at Paradise — genuinely one of the best wildflower displays in the entire national park system. The mountain dominates the skyline from Seattle on a clear day, making it a natural add-on for anyone visiting the Pacific Northwest.

Because of heavy winter snowfall, the visiting window for the higher-elevation areas is fairly short, concentrated mostly in July and August for peak wildflower season.

Things to Do:

Hiking the wildflower meadows at Paradise, especially in late July and August, is the classic Mount Rainier experience, with the Skyline Trail offering a moderate loop with mountain views throughout. Sunrise, on the drier east side of the park, offers a different but equally dramatic perspective with fewer crowds than Paradise.

For a longer hike, the Grove of the Patriarchs trail (when open) winds through old-growth forest along the Ohanapecosh River, a gentler contrast to the alpine meadows higher up.
