1 to 2 days covers a shuttle bus ride into the park, while 3 to 4 gives you time for backcountry hiking or flightseeing over Denali itself.

There's no general entry permit; private vehicle access on the park road is lottery-based each September.

Healy and Talkeetna are the closest towns, both offering lodging just outside the park entrance.

The entrance fee is $15/person (7-day), or purchase a National Parks Yearly Pass.

Why Visit?:

Denali protects North America's tallest peak and a vast, roadless subarctic wilderness that most visitors experience by shuttle bus rather than private car — a deliberate choice that keeps the park's single road quiet and its wildlife undisturbed. Grizzlies, caribou, moose, and Dall sheep are all genuinely likely sightings from the bus alone.

A clear view of Denali itself is famously not guaranteed — the mountain creates its own weather and is often shrouded in cloud, so a visit here comes with a bit of luck involved.

Things to Do:

A shuttle bus ride down the park road is the essential Denali experience — pick a route based on how much time you have, since the full road trip can take most of a day round-trip. For a different perspective, a flightseeing tour offers a real shot at seeing Denali's summit above the clouds, even on a day when it's obscured from the ground.

If you want to hike, Denali's backcountry is largely trail-less — rangers can help plan a route suited to your experience level, since this isn't a park with a simple, well-marked trail system like most others.

Closest airports: Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is the main gateway, about a 4.5-hour drive or a shorter flight/train connection to the park entrance via Fairbanks.
