Carlsbad Caverns is a completely different kind of national park experience — instead of trails and overlooks, you're descending into an enormous underground cave system, with chambers large enough to swallow a football field. The self-guided Natural Entrance route down into the Big Room is dramatic enough on its own to justify the trip.
From late spring through fall, the park's Mexican free-tailed bat colony puts on a genuinely unforgettable evening show, streaming out of the cave entrance by the hundreds of thousands at dusk.
The Natural Entrance Trail is the classic route — a steep, winding walk down into the cave through the same entrance the bats use, ending in the massive Big Room. If stairs aren't your thing, an elevator also drops straight down to the Big Room for a shorter, flatter loop.
Don't miss the Bat Flight Program if you're visiting between late May and October — rangers give a short talk at the amphitheater near the cave entrance before the bats emerge for their nightly hunt, genuinely one of the more memorable ranger programs in the park system.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park is about an hour away and pairs naturally with a Carlsbad Caverns visit, and the town of Carlsbad itself has a small but worthwhile aquarium and living desert zoo.
