Dog Canyon Campground
On the park’s remote northern side, Dog Canyon is a genuinely quiet alternative to Pine Springs, reachable only by a long drive through New Mexico rather than directly from the main park entrance — most visitors approach it via Carlsbad. Sites are primitive with vault toilets and potable water, no hookups, set in a wooded canyon that feels noticeably different from the exposed desert terrain around Pine Springs. This is the natural base for the park’s northern trail network and sees a fraction of the visitors that Pine Springs does, making it a strong pick for anyone who wants genuine solitude. Given the long, indirect drive required to reach it, this is a deliberate destination rather than a convenient stop — plan your route carefully before heading out.
