Why Visit?:

Indiana Dunes offers a surprisingly wild stretch of rolling sand dunes and beach right along Lake Michigan's southern shore, barely an hour from downtown Chicago — a genuinely accessible national park for anyone in the region who wants a real outdoor escape without a long drive. Its botanical diversity is famous among naturalists, with an unusually wide range of plant life packed into a small area.

It's an easy day trip rather than a destination vacation, which makes it a great option for a quick, real national park visit without much planning.

Things to Do:

Climbing Mount Baldy or the dunes at West Beach gives you the classic Indiana Dunes experience — sand dunes rising right off the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Cowles Bog Trail offers a longer loop through a genuinely diverse mix of wetland, forest, and dune ecosystems, a favorite for birders.

In summer, the beaches themselves are a big draw — West Beach and Central Avenue Beach both offer swimming and sunbathing with a surprisingly wild, undeveloped feel for how close this all is to a major city.

Closest airports: Chicago Midway (MDW) and O'Hare (ORD) are both about an hour away, giving you plenty of flight options if you're flying in.

Nearby Attractions:

Downtown Chicago is an easy day-trip pairing given the short drive, and the small lakeside towns of Michigan City and New Buffalo offer more low-key options just to the east.
