Why Visit?:

Channel Islands feels like a genuinely undiscovered park — five undeveloped islands with sea caves, kelp forests, and species (like the island fox) found nowhere else on Earth. Because it's boat- or plane-access only, it sees a fraction of the crowds of California's mainland parks.

Each island has its own distinct character, from Anacapa's dramatic sea arches to Santa Cruz's sea caves — the largest in the world, explorable by kayak.

Things to Do:

A boat tour or kayak trip through Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island is the signature experience — one of the largest sea caves on Earth. Anacapa Island offers an easy day trip with dramatic coastal views and a historic lighthouse, ideal if you only have time for one island.

Snorkeling or diving in the surrounding kelp forests is genuinely world-class, and overnight camping on any of the islands (with an advance reservation) is the best way to experience the park's silence and dark skies away from the mainland.

Closest airports: Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) and Ventura are both practical bases, with the ferry departing from Ventura Harbor — there's no airport on the islands themselves.

Nearby Attractions:

Downtown Ventura and Santa Barbara both make a scenic, low-key base for a Channel Islands trip, with beaches, wineries, and the historic Santa Barbara Mission worth adding if you have extra time.
